In the opening game of the night on Monday, October 31, Ewing will take on Twin Loup at 4:30 p.m. with the winner moving on to a 7:30 showdown with St. Mary's. In the 6 p.m. game, Stuart and Chambers/Wheeler Central will go head-to-head. In an all-Holt County showdown with a trip to the Niobrara Valley Conference finals on the line, Chambers/Wheeler Central was able to top St. Mary's in a tightly contested three sets to move on.
The Renegades were led by senior Jacie Laetsch's 22 kills. She also recorded three aces, five blocks and four digs on the night. Fellow senior Regan Dierks put down 12 kills of her own and recorded three blocks. Statistics for St. Mary's are currently unavailable. The win sends the Renegades to the conference final Friday night in Niobrara against North Central. The Cardinals will take on Elgin Public/Pope John in the consolation game that same night. Jaimie Schmitz jaimie@mylocalcountynews.com Landowners were present in O’Neill to watch proceedings as TransCanada appealed the landowners’ victory in county court. The major oil company argued that the landowners should not be reimbursed for what they had to go through, including attorney fees. The dozens of families affected by the TransCanada Pipelines gathered after court Monday morning on the depths of the old county courthouse where Brian Jorde explained to them what happened in court. “Nineteen different families in Holt County resisted, were sued by TransCanada and had the pleasure of going for a year and fighting them and incurring cost and incurring expenses,” Jorde explained. “And that is what we are trying to recoup since they have abandoned the project.” But that’s the argument as TransCanada said that there is no proof of abandonment. “TransCanada is arguing that they have not abandoned the condemnations proceedings,” Jorde said. “But I think it was pretty clear by what happened today that the judge is probably leaning in the direction that they have, and the question will come down to whether they have enough evidence as to the amount of fees and expenses actually incurred in the land owners resistance in the pipeline.” Jorde reassured the landowners that if anything this was a learning experience for the other times the pipeline will be fought in court. He is hopeful since TransCanada has lost every court case thus far in county court. “He will decide on whether or not he affirms, which means agrees with the county court,” Jorde said. “Or if he sees some issues and we might have to go back to county court and potentially do more work there.” There is no set time that the judge will make his decision. So for the landowners, it’s more waiting. "TransCanada continues to think that they can leave landowners in limbo with the expectation that any day they could come knocking on their door putting eminent domain papers in front of them,” said Jane Kleeb of Bold Nebraska. “TransCanada has no right to continue the stress and financial burden that they are placing on landowners because they have no active permit and therefore have no right to use eminent domain for private gain.” The brackets for the NVC Volleyball Tournament have been released and, as expected, the road to the championship will go through Elgin.
Elgin Public/Pope John earned the top seed after what has been a 23-1 regular season. Coming in as the two seed will be St. Mary's, who are 17-3 on the year. At 15-5, Chambers/Wheeler Central is the three seed. Stuart is the fourth seed at 16-7 while North Central is the fifth seed thanks to a 15-7 record. Ewing (10-11), Elkhorn Valley (12-9), Clearwater-Orchard (13-10), West Holt (6-13), Neligh-Oakdale (9-14), Niobrara/Veridgre (4-17), Boyd County (3-17) and Santee (1-19) drew the remaining eight seeds, in order. Action will kick off Monday, October 24 when Stuart takes on Santee in Stuart at 5 p.m. Then Clearwater-Orchard and West Holt square off at 6:15 p.m. at Pope John with the winner playing EPPJ at 7:30 p.m. North Central and Boyd County will go head-to-head at 6:15 p.m. in Stuart for the chance to face the winner of the Stuart/Santee match up. Elkhorn Valley and Neligh-Oakdale will meet in St. Mary's at 6:15 p.m. with the winner facing St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m. Ewing takes on Niobrara/Verdigre at 6:15 p.m. in Bartlett for the chance to take on Chambers/Wheeler Central at 7:30 p.m. Games will continue throughout the week, with the championship game scheduled for Friday in Niobrara at 7:30 p.m. Click the link to download the full NVC Tournament bracket.
On October 22, 2016 from 10 a.m. TO 2 P.M. the Antelope County Law Enforcement Center and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Antelope County Law Enforcement Center at 1102 L St, Neligh, Neb. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last May Americans turned in 893,498 pounds - 447 tons - of drugs at nearly 5,400 sites. 5,292 pounds came from Nebraskans. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. The majority of prescription drug abusers report in surveys that they get their drugs from friends and family. Americans understand that cleaning out old prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, kitchen drawers, and bedside tables reduces accidents, thefts, and the misuse and abuse of these medicines, including opioid painkillers that accounted for 20,808 drug overdoses - 78 a day - in 2014. Eight out of 10 new heroin users began by abusing prescription painkillers and moved to heroin when they could no longer obtain or afford those painkillers. There is also a box located in the lobby at the Antelope County Law Enforcement Center that allows anyone to drop off meds at other times as well. Again, the service is free and anonymous. Anyone with questions may call the Antelope Co Law Enforcement Center at 402-887-4148. West Holt, Chambers/Wheeler Central and Stuart runners earned conference honors at the Niobrara Valley Conference Cross Country Meet in Neligh on Friday.
