O’Neill St. Mary’s Grady Semin and O’Neill’s Spencer Davis were on opposite sides of the field during Saturday’s Northeast Nebraska Football Classic at Norfolk’s Memorial Field.
Davis played for the White team, while Semin suited up for the red squad. The White team jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead, but the Red team came storming back with 13 unanswered points. Semin recovered an onside kick with two second remaining in the game to give the Red team a chance to tie the ball game or take the lead. The Red squad executed a perfect hook-and-ladder, but the White team’s last line of defense, Oakland-Craig’s Robby Mayberry, brought down Randolph’s Noah Scott to prevent him from finding pay dirt and ending the game. Davis recorded a tackle in the win for the White team, while Semin was targeted once offensively. West Holt senior Austin Wenner was named to the Class D All-State team after his strong outing at the state golf meet.
The senior Husky shot an 81 and tied for third individually. Wenner’s stellar performance helped guide the Huskies to their third-straight Class D state championship. For the third consecutive year, the West Holt golf squad brought home the top team title from the Class D state golf meet at North Platte's Lake Maloney Golf Course.
“I’m very excited,” stated senior Austin Wenner. “It was fun, but nerve racking the whole time. I was able to keep my nerves and had a good time. It was fun.” The Huskies successfully defended their title by edging out North Platte St. Patrick’s by one stroke. West Holt combined to shoot a 355, while the Irish recorded a 356. “It feels really great, especially today with the conditions being a little windier,” commented junior Garrison Hansen. “The scores were a little higher and I didn’t come in where I wanted to on the front, but I just kept playing through. I knew we were going to use my score. Everyone else stepped up, especially Austin Wenner. He shot great today. I’m proud of everyone.” After graduating three seniors off of last year’s state championship team, the Huskies were not expected to be competing for a state title. West Holt defied the odds and captured its third-straight state crown. “Garrison Hansen was here last year and he helped me out,” Wenner noted. “We had to be team leaders this year.” Despite tough weather conditions with high winds and below average temperatures, West Holt was able to adjust to the adverse conditions on the back-nine to rally for the team title after sitting in third halfway through the meet. “We’ve always had a deal to finish better on the back (nine),” Hansen remarked. “That’s what we aim to do every time. We also aim to shoot 84s as a collective group. We just had to finish strong, work with what we got and have fun.” Wenner was the top golfer for the Huskies, placing third with an 81 to medal, while Hansen medaled after tying for seventh with an 83. “It was a good time to have my best performance,” Wenner said. “What better time than at state.” Jaxson Cadawallder tied for 34th with a 92, Max Roberts tied 50th with a 99 and Jaegher Ogden finished tied for 57th with a 101. With only one senior gone off of this year’s team, the Huskies hope to be back at North Platte next year playing for their fourth consecutive title. “It’s going to take a lot,” Hansen concluded. “It will take a lot of work and we’ll have to put in the work in the offseason and during the season to be prepared. We need leaders to show up, and we’ll be good.” Due to inclement weather, Day one of the Class C Boys Golf Championship in Kearney and Class D in North Platte today have been cancelled.
Those championship events will now each be an 18-hole event Wednesday. Tee times and pairings will remain the same. Golf is scheduled to take place Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Lake Maloney Golf Course. Several Holt County track athletes brought home some hardware from this past weekend’s state track and field meet at Omaha Burke Stadium.
The West Holt boys, along with sophomore girl Kevona Brown, had a solid showing at the state meet. The boys squad tied for fifth in the team standings with 26 points. The Huskies opened Friday’s action by taking second in the 4x800 relay. The team of Kooper Jelinek, Aaron Kraus, Ben Thiele and Jordan Tasler finished with a time of 8:15.61 - a tenth of a second behind state champion Freeman (8:15.51). “This was my first year running at state and I was super excited,” Thiele stated. “Kooper Jelinek PR’ed (personal record) with a 2:07 (in his leg), and that was great for him. That was super encouraging and watching us move up from there. We got the school record too. We’ve wanted that for a long time. It was the oldest record in our school. It’s super exciting.” Tasler and Thiele then finished 1-2 in the triple jump. Tasler captured the state crown with a leap of 42-11.75, while Thiele went 41.10.5. “It feels good,” Tasler noted. “It was a let down my first few years. I was fourth and third at districts and couldn’t quite make it here. It feels good to do it my last year. Coach said don’t be shy, hit the board and be aggressive. That’s what I did.” “Getting to jump with Jordan this year, it was super exciting going one and two with him,” Thiele added. “Coaches have always stuck by us and have done a great job with us. I think they’re more excited than us right now.” For the Lady Huskies, Brown placed in all three events she qualified for. The sophomore placed fourth in the 200 (26.29), sixth in the 100 (12.88) and seventh in the 400 (1:01.10). “It was very nice,” Brown commented. “Last year, I came down in three (events) and medaled in two. It’s nice to be in three events and come away with three medals.” Brown’s three medals at this year’s meet brings her total to five state medals over the past two seasons. “It’s nice to know I’m up there with them (the top girls in the state) and can keep up with them,” Brown continued. Other participants for the Huskies were Logan Wieneke in the 110 hurdles (16.10), Tasler in the 400 (52.97), Leighton Mlady in the discus (120-4), Carlie Wetzel in the 3200 (13:18.79) and the 4x400 relay team of Rumen Rentschler, Thiele, Kraus and Tasler (3:32.91). Ben Thiele won the triple jump, Logan Wieneke took first in the 110 hurdles and Jordan Tasler captured the district title in the 400, was the runner-up in the triple jump and anchored two district champion relay teams. “It feels great to end senior year like this,” Tasler commented. “We had a pretty good year in cross country and carried that into basketball season and had a better than expected year. It feels great.” The 4x400 relay team of Rumen Rentschler, Aaron Kraus, Thiele and Tasler, along with the 4x800 relay team of Kooper Jelinek, Kraus, Thiele and Tasler placed first in their respective events. “All of the confidence boost we can get we’ll take,” Tasler continued. “There are some good teams down at state like always. Brown left Norfolk with three district crowns. The Lady Husky captured the top spot in the 100, 200 and 400. “I went into the prelims just knowing all I had to do was just get to finals and do my thing in the finals,” Brown stated. “The 400 really had me nervous. I was sitting first with a 61 (second), and the next time (in the finals) was only a 63, but I was still nervous because it’s the 400 and you never know.” Carlie Wetzel and Leighton Mlady will join Brown at the state meet after earning qualifications.
