The West Holt golf team competed well against some stiff competition at the Crofton Invite Monday at Lakeview Course.
Crofton won the team title with a 370 team score. West Holt was second with 392, Clearwater/Orchard took fifth with a 439 and Niobrara/Verdigre recorded a 568 to claim seventh. Santee only had two golfers and did not register a team score. Connor Dahl was the top golfer Monday after scoring a match low 89 for the Crofton Warriors. Garrison Hansen was the top golfer for the Huskies with after shooting a 93. Max Roberts recorded 96, Austin Wenner tallied a 97, Jaxon Cadwaller had a 106 and Jaegher Odgen accumulated a 108. West Holt travels to Ewing April 10 at 9 a.m. at Summerland Golf Course.

The Crofton girls and boys team both took first in the team race. The Lady Warriors accumulated 119 points. Wausa was second with 97 and Bloomfield placed third with 96. Niobrara/Verdigre 16 O’Neill head football coach Brock Eichelberger, was picked to serve as a coach on the North team for the 2019 Nebraska Shrine Bowl.
Since 2013, Eichelberger has compiled a 28-30 record, and led the Eagles to a state championship, and perfect 13-0 record, in 2016. The Shrine Bowl of Nebraska is the state’s most prestigious high school all-star sports event. The non-profit produces annual events and related activities to raise funds and awareness to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a healthcare system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. The 61st Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl will be played Saturday, June 1, 2019, in Kearney, at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium on the campus of the University of Nebraska—Kearney. With the winter season officially over, several top athletes will begin collecting hardware for their stellar play from this past season.
Several athletes from Holt County earned all-Niobrara Valley Conference accolades. West Holt senior Cole Liable was named to the first-team wrestling squad. Husky senior Jade Buss and St. Mary’s senior Cole Rosenkrans earned second team honors. For boys basketball, St. Mary’s senior Grady Semin was named to the first team after a stellar season. West Holt seniors Jordan Tasler and Kooper Jelinek, along with Ewing senior Joey Wright and Chambers/ Wheeler Central junior Sam Jesse, were selected to the second team. CWC senior Justice Metschke, St. Mary’s freshman Aiden Hedstrom West Holt juniors Garrison Hansen and Logan Weineke earned a spot on the honorable mention team. On the girls side, CWC’s Taylor Peter and Morgan Ramsey, Ewing’s Ashley Koenig and Brenna Wagner and West Holt senior Carlie Wetzel were selected to the first team. CWC sophomore Michelle Koenig, Ewing junior Sidney Stallbaum and West Holt senior Peyton Randolph were named to the second team. St. Mary’s senior Abby Hedstrom, Ewing’s Miranda Summers and Tiana Thramer, West Holt senior Leyton Mlady and CWC sophomore Ryann Haburchak were selected to the honorable mention team. Despite a valiant effort, the Ewing girls basketball team fell to No. 1 Falls City Sacred Heart, 58-39, Thursday in the Class D2 state tournament.
The Lady Tigers hung with FCSH in the first half, trailing 22-16 at the break. FCSH used a 22-11 run in the third quarter to pull away and seal a spot in the semifinals. Brenna Wagner led the way with 11 points Sidney Stallbaum recorded 10 points, Ashley Koenig netted 9 points, Miranda Summers accounted for 6 points, Tiana Thramer had 2 points and Jaidyn Schindler added a point. Ewing ends its season with a 19-6 record, as Miranda Summers and Jaidyn Schindler played their final game for the Lady Tigers. The Chambers/Wheeler Central girls basketball team bowed out of the Class D2 state tournament with a 44-37 loss to Sterling Thursday morning at Lincoln Southwest.
After falling behind 10-6 in the opening quarter, the Lady Renegades cut the deficit to 2 with a 15-13 second quarter. Sterling used a 13-6 run to regain the momentum and held off CWC's comeback in the fourth to advance to the semifinals. Taylor Peters paced the Lady Renegades with 19 points. Morgan Ramsey tallied 10 points, Michelle Koenig netted 6 points and Rachel Dierks added 2 points. Chambers/Wheeler Central ends its season with a 21-5 record, as senior Kyra Farewell played her final game for the Lady Renegades. The girls basketball Class D2 state brackets were released earlier on Saturday.
Chambers/Wheeler Central (21-4) earned the fourth seed and plays fifth-seeded Sterling (21-5) Thursday at 9 a.m. at Lincoln Southwest. Ewing (19-5) battles top-seeded Fall City Sacred Heart (23-3) t 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Lincoln Southwest. The winners of both contest meet up Friday at 7 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. At Twin River High School, No. 10 Ewing defeated Exeter-Milligan 57-51. The Renegades are state bound after a win over Kenesaw on Friday night in the D2-4 district final.
Fourth-seed CWC defeated No. 13 Kenesaw 55-14 at St. Paul High School. The Lady Eagles ended their season as the C1-4 District runner up in Norfolk on Thursday night.
