With several district champions and state qualifiers, the West Holt girls and boys track and field teams had stellar performances at Thursday’s District C-5 meet at Norfolk Catholic.

The West Holt boys team finished as district runners-up, behind district team champion Norfolk Catholic.

Numerous West Holt relays and individuals brought home a district title to Atkinson and earned a spot at next weekend’s state meet.

Ben Thiele won the triple jump, Logan Wieneke took first in the 110 hurdles and Jordan Tasler captured the district title in the 400, was the runner-up in the triple jump and anchored two district champion relay teams.

“It feels great to end senior year like this,” Tasler commented. “We had a pretty good year in cross country and carried that into basketball season and had a better than expected year. It feels great to close it out going to state in four events. It feels great.”

The 4x400 relay team of Rumen Rentschler, Aaron Kraus, Thiele and Tasler, along with the 4x800 relay team of Kooper Jelinek, Kraus, Thiele and Tasler placed first in their respective events.

“All of the confidence boost we can get we’ll take,” Tasler continued. “There are some good teams down at state like always. We’re going to go out, compete, go as hard as we can and leave it all out there.”

Sophomore Kevona Brown’s big day helped guide the Lady Huskies to a fourth-place team finish.

Brown left Norfolk with three district crowns. The Lady Husky captured the top spot in the 100, 200 and 400.

“I went into the prelims just knowing all I had to do was just get to finals and do my thing in the finals,” Brown stated. “The 400 really had me nervous. I was sitting first with a 61 (second), and the next time (in the finals) was only a 63, but I was still nervous because it’s the 400 and you never know.”

Carlie Wetzel and Leighton Mlady will join Brown at the state meet after earning qualifications. Wetzel placed second in the 3200, while Mlady’s heave of 121-9 in the discus earned her an automatic qualification by surpassing the 117-4 criteria mark.

Several other West Holt athletes also hope to make the trip to Omaha, but have to wait on other district times for a potential wildcard spot.

Wetzel placed fourth in the 1600, the Lady Huskies’ 4x100 relay team of Lindsey Jelinek, Ashley Larby, Haley Feel, Brown were the runners-up, Thiele took fourth in the 800, Brianna Rentschler claimed fifth in the 3200, Jelinek was sixth in the 100 hurdles, the girls 4x800 relay team of Rentschler, Wetzel, Lindee Wentworth and Sadie Jarecke placed third, the team of Ashley Larby, Lindee Wentworth, Leighton Mlady and Landyn Mlady was sixth in the 4x400 relay, while the boys 4x100 relay team of Jakeem Brown, Caid McCart, Tyler Larby and Rumen Rentschler claimed fifth.

In the field events, Rumen Rentschler finished fourth in the high jump and pole vault, Jelinek placed sixth in the long jump and Leighton Mlady was sixth in the shot.

The Class C state meet begins May 17 at 9 a.m. at Omaha Burke Stadium.

“It will help me a lot,” Brown concluded on returning to state. “I know what is down there and what to expect.”
