The countdown until Christmas break is not the only thing on the minds of students at the O'Neill Public Schools.  From Dec. 11 to Dec. 18, the high school student council is hosting a school-wide food drive.

Jennifer Troester, cosponsor of the student council along with Trisha Wiseman, said the student council is hosting a school-wide competition to collect canned goods

"It's a food fight between the elementary and the high school.  Kids try to see who can raise the most food.  The winning school's principal gets a pie in the face," Troester said.

The community is also invited to participate.

Andrew Burival, student council president, said: "It's more intended for the school, but anyone can bring food down to the elementary or high school main offices."

Burival also said that the food drive benefits the local Central Nebraska Community Services organization.

"All of the food goes down to the CNCS Food Pantry. They especially need the food this time of year," Burival said.

Troester said the Student Council does more with CNCS than the food drive this time of year.

"We also adopt a family.  CNCS suggests who that family should be and let us know sizes and genders. Then we buy gifts for that family," Troester said.
