The City of O'Neill truly is a great place to raise a family.

The city was honored by SafeWise, a home security and safety brand committed to increasing safety education, awareness, and preparedness in American communities, as the safest city in Nebraska. They announced the honor on Monday.

O'Neill was given the honor due to the low crime rate the city reports. According to the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics, O'Neill only had 1.08 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents and just 3.52 property crimes for every 1,000 residents. The city experienced just 13 total property crimes in 2014, the most recent year the FBI has records of.

To be eligible for the honor, a city must have had a population of at least 3,000 and have submitted a complete report to the FBI for crime reporting. Violent crimes were defined as crimes such as aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery while property crimes were defined as burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft.

Rounding out the top ten were Aurora, Seward, Blair, Falls City, Columbus, Cozad, Wahoo, Gering and Chadron.
