Memorial Services for Shirley Thomson, age 77, of Inman, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Inman Community Church. Shirley passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015, at home surrounded by her family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Rev. Randy Schmeichel will officiate.

Shirley was born on Sept. 14, 1937, to Justin and Mable (Gaughenbaugh) Butterfield. As the oldest of 10 children growing up in rural Inman, Shirley learned the importance of family and hard work from a young age.

After graduating from Inman High School, she moved to Spokane, WA. There she met and fell in love with Glenn "Pete" Thomson. They married in June 1956 and continued to live in Washington where they started their family until 1972 when Pete and Shirley moved back to Nebraska with their two children, Glenn Jr. and Vicki.

Throughout her life, Shirley was very active not only in and around her home as a young girl helping by fetching water for cooking and cleaning, helping with the younger ones and working in the hayfield, but also later taking care of her own family, sewing clothes and quilts and working outside. She also loved her various jobs around her community as a security guard, village clerk, working at the sale barn or in retail. Shirley always had a positive attitude and a friendly smile for everyone.

The main focus of her life was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. She spent many years researching and preserving her family's history, compiling a wonderful record of her family tree and making copies for everyone.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 59 years, Glenn "Pete" Thompson Sr.; one daughter, Vicki and husband Brady Latzel; one daughter-in-law, Karen Thomson; four grandchildren: Jennifer and husband Matt, Justin, Jason and Carl; three great-grandchildren: Paityn, Korbin and Tukyr; three brothers: Larry and wife Kay, Chuck and wife Linda, Jack, Danny and wife Linda; and one sister, Karen Wiseman.

She was proceeded in death by her son, Glenn "Gene" Thomson Jr.; her parents; three brothers, Donald, Joe, Gary and Arlee; and one sister, Charlotte Bagley.
