Vivian Schmidt, age 96, of O’Neill and formerly of Spencer passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill.
Following her wishes, her body has been cremated and services will be held at a later date.
Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill is in charge of arraignments.
Vivian was born on August 5, 1920, in Spencer, NE, to Joseph and Vlasta (Pucelik) Fiala. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1937, where she took normal training to be a teacher. She taught school in Anoka and District 13, where she met her future husband, a local farmer named Paul Schmidt.
Vivian married Paul on June 23, 1943, in Spencer. Vivian and Paul made their home on the family farm, where they raised their children. After the kids flew the nest, Vivian returned to the job she loved, which was teaching, as a teacher’s aide. Paul passed away in 1988 after 45 years of marriage. Vivian moved to O’Neill in 1996.
Vivian was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spencer, NE. She loved to play cards, bingo, Sudoku, cribbage, and do crossword puzzles. She also had a big garden, which she loved spending time in.
Vivian is survived by her two children, Karen Coombs and husband Edmund of Omaha, NE, Bette Pavel and husband Duane of Seward, NE; four grandchildren, Rick Boettcher and wife Melanie, Renae Schiewe and husband Mark, Richard Hall and wife Annie, Robert Hall and wife Rochelle, 2 step grandchildren; Kerri Pavel and Katie Pascar and husband Yuri,and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul in 1988, three brothers and two sisters.
