George Edward "Mac" McCarthy passed away Saturday, April 8th, at his home surrounded by his family.
 
George was born February 7, 1932 in O'Neill, Nebraska to George and Lillian (Simonson) McCarthy. He graduated from St. Mary Academy and attended Creighton University. George served in the U.S. Navy from August 1952 - August 1956. Following his discharge he travelled around California before coming back to Nebraska to settle down. In 1958 he started working for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads. On August 18, 1962 George was united in marriage to Deloris L. "Dee" Buck in St. James, Nebraska. He worked for the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement for 36 years until retirement. George was a member of the Community of Christ, Eagles Club, American Legion, V.F.W. Life Member, AARP, Cub Scout Master and the ONeill Sheriff and Police Officer Association.
 
He is survived by his wife, Deloris "Dee" of Columbus, NE. One son, George "Chuck" (Denise) McCarthy of Columbus, NE., and two daughters, Darcey (Rick) Snethen of Columbia, MO. and Coleen (Parl) Robinson of Council Bluffs, IA. Five grandchildren: Amanda (Calen) Staub and George Andrew McCarthy (fiancee Samantha Tiaden) of Columbus, NE, Cole Fleming (special friend Amanda Hohneke) of Council Bluffs, IA, and Libby and Michael Snethen of Columbia, MO. Three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Shelby and Addison Staub of Columbus, NE. Four sisters, Beverly J. McCarthy and Barbara (Bernard) Pruss of O'Neill, NE, Kay (Larry) Butterfield of Beloit, KS and Lynn (Tom) Higgins of Valentine, NE., and one brother, James (Linda) McCarthy of Dupuyer, MT. Two sisters-in-law: Gertrude Trudi Malcom of South Sioux, NE and Marion Buck of Huxley, IA and many nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian McCarthy, In-laws, Charles Lester and Mildred Buck, two brothers-in-law, Darrell Buck and Wilmer Malcom, and two nephews.
