High temperatures are forecasted across northeast Nebraska this week.

Starting Tuesday, temperatures are expected to exceed 100°.

Here are some tips for staying safe and cool with the upcoming heat wave:
  1. Stay Hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will keep your body cool with the high temperatures. Also, try eating colder foods, such as fruit and vegetables.
  2. Stay Out Of The Sun While It Is The Hottest. If possible, limit direct exposure of the sun from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Limiting your stops to public buildings will help to keep you cool and air conditioned away from home.
  3. Wear Light Fitting Clothing. Wearing light colored, loose fitting clothing will help you cool. Also, wearing hats will help to keep the sun off your scalp and will serve as a source of shade for your upper body. Wear fewer accessories, such as jewelry, during the hot weather as the metallic parts will hold heat.
  4. Limit The Sunlight Coming Into Your House. Lowering shades, closing curtains, and blocking windows will help keep heat out. Keeping the windows open may seem tempting due to the added light, but along with that light comes a significant amount of heat.
  5. Plan Your Outdoor Activities For The Day. Plan ahead for the heat by planning out your activities for the day and setting them aside in the early morning or the late afternoon. In doing so, you can have an organized time frame for being outside while still limiting your time spent in the sun.
