Citing premeditation and malice, the Supreme Court has upheld the first degree murder conviction of Matthew Hinrichsen of Ewing.

The Nebraska Supreme Court Friday upheld the conviction in the case of Matthew Hinrichsen. Hinrichsen was convicted by a jury in 2013 of first degree murder in the murder of newlyweds Alex and Victoria Lee Vargas at a rural Antelope County residence in December of 2012.

Hinrichsen appealed, saying that the killings happened because of a "sudden quarrel" and as such, which would negate the definition for first degree murder. Hinrichsen was arguing that his rights to due process were violated.

But the Supreme Court disagreed, saying in their ruling that they found premeditation and malice in their deliberations, and that their decision was valid. Hinrichsen was sentenced to two life terms in 2014
