In a battle of last years two 8-man runner-ups, it was Chambers/Wheeler Central/Ewing that came out on top, dominating Burwell by a score of 52-28.
Leading the way for CWCE was junior Daniel Libolt. Libolt was all over the field on Friday, scoring on the ground and through the air as well as leading a defense that shut down the high-powered Longhorn offense.
Things did not get off to a good start for the Renegades when Burwell returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and drove for a second score shortly after to take a 14-0 lead.
CWCE answered on the next drive with a quick screen to Libolt, who took it to the house. Libolt followed that up just a few plays later with an electric 50 yard touchdown run to give the Renegades a 16-14 lead.
In the second, Libolt added a fumble recovery to give CWCE the ball. He took advantage of that himself, adding a second touchdown run to put the Renegades up 24-14. Connor Croxen then added his fourth interception of the season. Quarterback Carter Croxen took advantage, scoring on a quarterback sneak to extend the lead. The two teams then traded scores in the final two minutes, including a deep touchdown pass from Carter to Connor Croxen with 31 seconds left in the half. Connor added his fifth interception of the season to send the game into halftime at a score of 40-20, CWCE.
In the third quarter, Carter Croxen added another touchdown pass, this one to Zane Patrick. That proved to be the only score of the quarter.
In the fourth, Libolt took his turn through the air, connecting with Patrick for another Renegade touchdown. Burwell added one more late score, but it was too late as the Renegades won by a final score of 52-28.
CWCE now turns it's attention towards a showdown with West Holt after a bye week next week.
Other Holt County scores from Friday:
West Holt returned to the win column, topping Boyd County 33-14.
Stuart and St. Mary's will meet in O'Neill Saturday for an all-Holt County showdown.
