The Good Samaritan Society Atkinson/Prairie Winds is proud to announce that this year’s satisfaction survey revealed high results of satisfaction with its services. Overall, on the entire campus, its customers; residents and families scored the campus a 4 out of 5. The skilled nursing residents scored the facility at a 4.15 while the residents of Prairie Winds scored the facility at a 4.83. These surveys ask questions about life in the facility, the staff, the responsiveness of its staff, the services provided and overall well being. Each year the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society conducts satisfaction surveys of its customers in all lines of service on all its campuses. In Atkinson, a survey was conducted for the skilled nursing facility and for the assisted living facility and send both the residents and families of both facilities a survey to complete. These confidential surveys and results are sent, compiled and sent back to each facility with results done by Gallup. “These scores reflect the dedication and willingness of the employees of both facilities to ensure that each resident is well cared for, that their needs are being met and that they feel valued, loved and at peace” says Administrator Jessica Eby. “Our staff go above their job descriptions each and every day to ensure that every residents gets the services and help they need and in some cases to ensure that their last stage of their life is as comfortable as possible. I am very proud of our staff this year, that even with today’s long term care challenges, they press on and live out our motto, In Christ’s Love, Everyone Is Someone”. The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society is the largest not for profit provider of long term care, assisted living and senior care options in the country. The Good Samaritan Society-Atkinson has been serving Atkinson and its surrounding communities since 1963 and Prairie Winds Assisted Living since 2001 and looks forward to continuing that service for another 50+ years. West Holt Medical Services Foundation is pleased to announce Kayla Bouska and Kassidy Jelinek as their $500 spring scholarship recipients.
Bouska is a 2014 graduate of Stuart High School and is currently studying Radiologic Technology through the online program at Southeast Community College, Lincoln. Bouska was inspired to pursue this career path after participating in job shadow opportunities where she observed technicians using x-ray and Computed Tomography equipment. Bouska shares, “I found the process to be fascinating and was impressed by their knowledge and caring attitudes. I hope to work with many of the health care professionals I met when I was growing up.” Upon completion of her Associate of Science Degree in Radiologic Technology, Bouska plans to return to rural Nebraska to launch her career. Jelinek is a 2016 graduate of West Holt High School and is studying Biology at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln. The job shadow experience at West Holt Medical Services helped shape Jelinek’s educational dreams. “Learning how the human body operates and seeing the Physical Therapists interact with their patients, confirmed that I want to have a career in the medical field," Jelinek said. Upon completion of her degree in Biology, Jelinek plans to apply to medical school and become a Surgeon. “Having gone through several surgeries myself will help me relate to my patients," Jelinek said. Since 1988 West Holt Medical Services Foundation has awarded over 200 scholarships to local students. The purpose of the scholarship awards are to provide financial assistance towards education opportunities for students pursuing a course of study in the medical or allied-health field and further encourage students to return to West Holt Medical Services for employment upon completion of their studies. Four $500 scholarships are awarded each year, two in the fall and two in the spring. The next scholarship application deadline is April 15, 2017. For more information visit www.westholtmed.org or call the Foundation at 402-925-1956. Applications are now being accepted for a scholarship in memory of Dolores Batenhorst Keating. West Holt Medical Services Foundation began managing a memorial fund in 2010 established in the memory of Dolores Batenhorst Keating, one of Atkinson’s most caring residents. Dolores was born in Stuart, graduated from Stuart High School and lived her entire adult life in Atkinson. She worked for over 25 years as a Registered Nurse at West Holt Memorial Hospital. Dolores was married to John Keating for 56 years. They had eight children, Mary Rose Schaaf, Maureen Tsuchiya, Phillip Keating, Mark Keating, Patrick Keating, James Keating, Matthew Keating and Gerard Keating. Dolores Keating was a strong supporter of local, high-quality medical care, and her family has honored her memory to assist local students with scholarships towards pursuing their dreams in the medical field. The memorial fund, with generous contributions from both the family and Dolores’s many friends, currently totals over $48,669.30 and is managed by the West Holt Medical Services Foundation. Each year the annual interest earned from the fund will be utilized to provide three scholarships of $1,000 each to Holt County residents pursuing a degree in the medical field who meet the following criteria:
The Keating family will subsidize the scholarship until the memorial fund is selfsupporting and the family has set a goal to grow the memorial fund to $100,000 with the support of the community that knew and loved Dolores for many years. They are challenging those with a dream for local health care to contribute to this fund and help Holt County retain its current health care services, grow new services, and keep local medical talent here at home. The Scholarship Application Packet is available from the West Holt Medical Services Foundation by visiting their website at www.westholtmed.org and clicking on the Foundation tab. You may also call the Foundation Director at 402-925-1956 for more information. Application deadline is postmarked date on or before December 15, 2016. The mission of the West Holt Medical Services Foundation is to obtain, invest, and distribute funds which will help advance and improve the quality of care in North Central Nebraska provided by West Holt Medical Services. The hospital’s total profit margin of 2.37% exceeded the 1.78% of other critical access hospitals its size. The hospital had 161 total days of cash on hand compared to 113 of its counterparts. Eighty-three percent of the hospital’s total revenue came from outpatient services, confirming a national healthcare trend towards outpatient-based services. Bradley Pfeifer, CEO, presented the administrator’s report highlighting activities and projects throughout the year. Gross patient revenue exceeded $10 million for the first time. Over the prior year, the clinic saw a revenue growth of 18.91% with 531 more patient visits and outpatient revenue increased 26.95%. Another highlight was the addition of doctors Jarrod and Katherine Wiegman, M.D. Several equipment purchases in 2016 included a 64-slice CT scanner, mobile CArm for surgery, emergency room patient stretcher, and others. West Holt Memorial Hospital also introduced the 340B retail pharmacy program in 2016. Finally, a strategic plan was developed and implementation has begun, including phase one with a new outreach/specialty clinic conveniently located where the current administration offices reside. Pfeifer concluded his report by sharing, “I am excited about the direction West Holt Memorial Hospital is headed. Our future is bright and I look forward to continually improving patient care for our North Central Nebraska communities.” Joel Elm, Chairman of the Nominations Committee, reported on nominations for both the Corporate Board and Board of Directors. West Holt Medical Services Foundation is pleased to announce that a donation has been received by an anonymous donor through its Grateful Patient Program honoring April Dexter, APRN and Tracy Ludwig, RN.
Through this special program, patients and their families have a way to say “thank you” to West Holt Medical Services staff for the remarkable care they received and at the same time support an area of their choice. In recognition of this gift, Team Leaders, Marvin Smoot and Tana O’Neill presented Dexter and Ludwig with a starfish lapel pin to wear proudly on their employee badge. A certificate of appreciation with words of thanks from their grateful patient was also given to the employees. “I would like to say thanks to April Dexter for working me in and taking such good care of me! She is an outstanding provider. You couldn’t ask for anyone better! Thanks to Tracy Ludwig for her professional care. She goes the extra mile to make sure you are comfortable. She is an awesome nurse and can draw the ‘short straw’ every time. West Holt Medical Services should be honored to have these two as part of their staff,” shared the grateful patient. The starfish pin represents “making a difference every day” and is based on a story of an old man who walks upon a shore littered with thousands of starfish, bleached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. “Why do you bother?” the old man scoffed. “You’re not saving enough to make a difference.” The young man thought for a moment, then picked up another starfish and sent it spinning back into the water. “Made a difference to that one” he said (Adapted from “The Star Thrower” by Loren Eiseley). “Day in, day out, our healthcare providers share their time, medical expertise and compassion with their patients, fulfilling West Holt Medical Services’ mission to provide well-rounded family healthcare with respect and understanding for the physical and emotional needs of our North Central Nebraska communities,” shared Jessica Prussa, Marketing & Foundation Director. Atkinson Floral owner, Curie Mincer donated fifty percent of her October pink rose sales to West Holt Medical Services Foundation.
The donation will be used towards the mammography program at West Holt Medical Services. “I wanted to give back to the hospital because I know it will be used to directly help patients," Mincer shared. "Breast cancer prevention is very close to my heart because two of my aunts have battled this disease." With a family history of breast cancer Mincer believes, “it is very important for women to get regular mammograms to show your daughters how important it is to take care of yourself. This is the greatest gift women can give to their families.” According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Every year, about 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are reported nationwide and more than 40,000 women die from the disease. West Holt Medical Services is committed to the fight against breast cancer by providing state-of-the-art digital mammography to identify breast disease early and accurately. Mammograms are digital x-rays of the breast, and are the single most effective way of determining breast cancer. Having regular mammograms will not reduce a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer, but will detect cancer earlier, reducing her risk of dying from cancer. Radiology Director, Mari Osborne recommends “women should perform monthly self-exams and have a mammogram as recommended by her medical provider.” West Holt Medical Services is a certified Pink Ribbon Facility. This designation is awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities and is provided by Hologic, the makers of the digital mammography equipment located at West Holt Medical Services. Through donations West Holt Medical Services Foundation is able to continue fulfilling its mission to obtain, invest, and distribute funds which will help advance and improve the quality of care in North Central Nebraska provided by West Holt Medical Services.
